By 2050, urban populations may double to 6.7 billion from today’s 3.5 billion. Cities generate over 80% of global GDP and are responsible for more than 70 percent of global CO2 emissions.

The good news? Solutions exist to meet the demands of urban lifestyles while staying within our planet’s ecological boundaries. WWF's vision: help foster One Planet Cities across the globe – cities that enable all people to thrive within the ecological limits of our one and only planet.

One Planet Cities share a commitment to work toward the Paris Agreement goal – to keep our global temperatures below a 1.5 C rise. We will get there if we make clear plans, learn from each other’s successes, and adapt the most innovative solutions to individual city circumstances. 

Cities are making real progress right now. WWF highlights this progress to inspire other cities to follow. We do this by: showcasing achievement in our biennial One Planet City Challenge; sharing ideas and best practice through cases profiled in Urban Solutions; and expanding citizen participation via We Love Cities.

Climate change already impacts many urban areas. Fortunately, tackling climate change often provides co-benefits like improved air quality, cleaner energy systems, better housing, and increased public transport - basic needs every local government must fulfill.
