Be a part of the exciting start-up phase of an ambitious, global innovation initiative that will accelerate and scale community driven innovative solutions to protect the future of people and the planet.

Panda Labs is WWF’s decentralized innovation lab. It is part of the world’s largest conservation NGO, and has been developed closely with the Impact Hub Global team to build up an innovation ecosystem for impact. This is a unique opportunity to truly support global collaboration on the most urgent environmental challenges using innovation as the main tool in your tool kit.

Imagine waking up every morning, ready to take on important work in an organization that has the potential to change the world. You will be part of a global team working with WWF offices in Eastern Europe, East-Africa, Southeast Asia and Internationally and with external partners at multiple levels.

We offer 5 internship positions with a lot of freedom and room for creativity to design and run innovative processes and to help build your career protecting the future of nature and people, for 6 months starting in March 2020.

Locations: Romania, Vietnam, Chile, Kenya (open to other + remote possibilities)

Living expenses and travel costs will be covered.

5 officers on the frontlines of innovation for nature and people

Communications Officer (6 months internship)


Reporting to: Global Panda Labs Coordinator
Location: Romania - and/or open to consider remote possibilities; role could involve travel

Position Responsibilities:
    Update Global Panda Labs Communications Strategy/Plan, seeking input from key stakeholders;
    Lead implementation of Communications Strategy/Plan; including coordination of tasks;
    Assist local offices in developing and implementing local communications plans;
    Compile updates from Panda Labs around the world to prepare a monthly newsletter;
    Manage community contacts and mailing list(s);
    Manage social media for Panda Labs, including preparing posts and content;
    Coordinate preparation of communications materials, including case studies and blog posts;
    Participate in regular community calls to receive and share updates;
    Manage Panda Labs website content as needed;
    Create innovative solutions to improve visibility of Panda Labs in WWF and externally, and support teams in communicating outcomes and learning constructively.

Ideal Competencies:
    Degree in Communications or relevant field of study;
    Experience in communications;
    Experience/ability to design visually appealing communications materials;
    Fluent in English;
    “People person” enjoys/able to interact with people from diverse backgrounds;
    Understanding of (WWF’s) environmental projects is preferred.

Development Officer (6 months internship)


Reporting To: Global Panda Labs Coordinator
Base: Romania - and/or open to consider remote possibilities; role could involve travel

Position Responsibilities:

    Research funding opportunities relevant to Panda Labs, including: Foundations and Grant opportunities, and possible partnerships. Maintain and manage a database of possible opportunities.
    Assist in preparation of materials to assist applications and proposals. Lead and/or support local teams in proposal processes.
    Assist with relationship management, to possible/existing donors and partners, and/or relevant WWF fundraising teams.
    Work with Panda Labs teams on the ground to prepare local fundraising strategies and assist with execution.
    Assist in the development of communications and marketing materials relevant to fundraising efforts, including presentations aimed to attract possible donors, funders, partners.

Ideal Competencies:

    Fundraising experience is strongly preferred - willingness and interest to learn is a must!
    Excellent writer and communicator, with good math / accounting skills;
    Able to use Word and Excel to prepare technical proposals and budgets;
    Fluent in English;
    Attention to detail, with strong follow-through;
    Comfortable presenting and engaging with people;
    Understanding of (WWF’s) environmental projects is preferred.

Wildlife Innovation Officer (6 months internship)


Reporting To: Global Panda Labs Coordinator
Base: Kenya - or open to consider Namibia, Romania, or remote; role involves travel

This position is a coordination assistant role, related to helping Panda Labs to coordinate a first round validation experiment of “wildlife credits,” taking place with partners in 2-4 countries, as well as other relevant work related to Panda Labs’ global Moonshot and Wildlife Innovation Challenge activities, and partnership with Nature Pays. The role works closely with the Panda Labs Global Coordinator and local teams on the ground. The project involves developing and testing models for wildlife credits as a mechanism to channel rewards/incentives to community stakeholders in exchange for conservation performance; it provides firsthand experience exploring Pay-for-Performance / Payment for Ecosystem Services models for conservation.

Position Responsibilities:

    Coordination support to facilitate implementation of the Panda Labs led “Wildlife Credits” validation experiments taking place in 2-4 countries.
    Facilitate regular calls; use online-based communication/coordination tools (Slack, Trello, G-drive) to coordinate, track + report activities of multiple teams.
    Support local teams on the ground in Kenya implementing Moonshot Challenge activities in the SOKNOT region, in close collaboration with Nature Pays. This includes facilitation of innovation processes in line with the Panda Labs cycle, helping with event coordination, partner management and community-building work.
    Coordinate and support graduate study / consultancy work taking place in Kenya related to Wildlife Credits program.
    Assist in writing/preparing program documents, and fundraising to support experimentation, and seeking of supporting partnerships.
    Assist in the development and roll-out of Panda Labs “Community First” monitoring program and ensuring other relevant community safeguards are in place, considered in project design, and complied with.  

Ideal Competencies:

    Attention to detail, strong follow-through, and ability to stay on top of multiple tasks;
    Ability to coordinate effectively among multiple people/teams in international contexts;
    Strong writer/communicator, able to use MS Word + Excel and online-based tools;
    Drivers’ License is preferred;
    Fluency in English is required (+ local language(s) is preferred);
    Understanding of (WWF’s) environmental projects and innovation is preferred.

Innovation Officer (6 months internship)


Reporting to: Global Panda Labs Coordinator / Local Office Innovation Lead (Chile)
Base: Chile; role could involve travel

Position Responsibilities:

    Understand local needs and aims with regards to local Panda Labs activities – assist in Work Plan development as needed/appropriate for 2020 activities.
    Internal Awareness-raising and buy-in: Share information; generate enthusiasm in local office for Panda Labs; assist with workshops + systemizing innovation.
    Moonshot: Assist local office to implement “Moonshot” activities for 2020, relevant to applying the Panda Labs cycle to support innovation around empowering local communities as stewards and beneficiaries of natural resources.
    Assist in local innovation ecosystem building around challenge topic(s).
    Host events that raise visibility of WWF and Panda Labs, and contribute to ecosystem building around identified priority and/or challenge topic areas.
    Contribute content towards blogs, research + social media
    Participate in regular Taskforce Calls; contribute to development/use of communication + coordination systems; help create active community of implementers.
    Document outcomes, learnings, and success stories / case studies.
    Assist development of local plans for Strategic Planning, Community Building, Community Safeguards, Communications, Stakeholder Engagement, Partnership Development, and Fundraising.
    Possible travel may be required, but this can be discussed on a case by case basis.
    Depending on your interests, greater emphasis can be given to research or practical experiences related to: Community Development, Community Safeguards, Measuring & Evaluation, Innovation Integration, Strategic Planning, and/or Partnership Development which can be discussed with local innovation lead.

Ideal Competencies:

    Innovation background / experience with Design Thinking and Partnership Development is preferred;
    Fluency in Spanish + English; local residency / familiarity with local culture preferred;
    Ability to communicate professionally (written, spoken) in English is required;
    Excellent writer and communicator;
    Ability to adapt communication for different audiences;
    Public speaking skills and presentations may be required;
    Enthusiastic and a self-starter, enjoys working with people, positive and flexible attitude, and problem-solving/ critical thinking skills;
    Passionate about environmental issues;
    Able to work remotely with different cultures and on simultaneous projects;
    Time management and task prioritization is required;
    Understanding of (WWF’s) environmental projects is preferred.

Base: Vietnam; role could involve travel

Position Responsibilities:

    Understand local needs and aims with regards to local Panda Labs activities – assist in Work Plan development as needed/appropriate for 2020 activities.
    Internal Awareness-raising and buy-in: Share information and generate enthusiasm in local office for Panda Labs; assist with stakeholder mapping and securing buy-in from key internal stakeholders.
    Moonshot: Assist local office to implement “Moonshot” activities for 2020, relevant to applying the Panda Labs cycle to support innovation around empowering local communities as stewards and beneficiaries of natural resources.
    Assist in local innovation ecosystem building around challenge topic(s).
    Host events that raise visibility of WWF and Panda Labs, and contribute to ecosystem building around identified priority and/or challenge topic areas.
    Contribute content towards blogs, research and social media, related to ecosystem building and visibility.
    Participate in regular Taskforce Calls; contribute to development and use of communication and coordination systems; help create an active community of implementers.
    Document outcomes, learnings, and success stories / case studies.
    Assist in the development of local plans for Community Building, Communications, Stakeholder Engagement and Fundraising.

Ideal Competencies:

    Innovation background / experience is preferred;
    Fluency in local languages, and local residency is an advantage 
    Familiarity with local culture is preferred;
    Good written and spoken English;
    Excellent writer and communicator;
    Enthusiastic, enjoys working with people, positive and flexible attitude, and problem-solving skills’
    Understanding of (WWF’s) environmental projects is preferred.
