America is All In launches to drive climate action

Posted on February, 19 2021

Today, the United States has formally re-entered the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, in the wake of President Biden's executive order in January. A coalition of U.S. cities, states, companies, universities, civil society and other institutions – We Are Still In – continued to drive climate action in the country in the absence of federal support. To reflect the renewed momentum, the coalition has evolved into America Is All In.

America is All In is one of a number of national alliances for climate action, with sister coalitions active in Argentina, Brazil, Japan, Mexico, South Africa and Viet Nam.

Manuel Pulgar-Vidal, WWF Global Lead Climate & Energy said: "Since 2017, cities, states, tribal nations, businesses, and other institutions kept the momentum for climate action alive in the United States. Now, that momentum is unstoppable. Alliances for climate action such as America Is All In point to the deep transformation of the energy, transport, land-use and other systems now underway, and the economic opportunities that a net zero-carbon society has to offer. If every country is able to connect sub-national and non-state actor leadership with high national ambition, we will be able to achieve the transition to a decarbonized world at the speed and scale required to keep warming to 1.5°C."

Marcene Mitchell, senior vice president of climate change at WWF-US said: "In the face of many hurdles over the past four years, actions taken by American cities, states, businesses and other institutions have kept our climate goals within reach. They've also created a foundation we can build upon with the Biden administration who will be a partner in addressing the climate crisis. Through their leadership, we have learned that the responsibility for climate action lives with us all and that the U.S. can only achieve our climate goals if every sector of society and every level of government work together.

"America Is All In will help the U.S. rise to the challenge of addressing the climate crisis while accelerating our national economic recovery and building a healthier, more equitable future for people and the planet."
