Climate & Business
Working with business to tackle climate change
Solutions to the climate crisis are available and economically viable, and businesses of all sizes are taking steps to meet the Paris Agreement target of limiting global warming to 1.5°C.
WWF works with businesses to help them on their journey, from cutting their emissions in line with climate science, to supporting those with innovative solutions, and securing renewable energy to power their business operations.
Businesses are critical in the fight against climate change as they are the source of most of the world’s emissions. The targets set by governments will never be achieved if businesses don’t move towards them. That is why we are calling on businesses to play their part.
WWF has multiple initiatives designed to help businesses in their decarbonisation efforts. We work with companies from the first steps all the way through to the implementation of their climate strategy. Our initiatives are designed with climate science as our core foundation, and everything we do is aimed at securing a 1.5°C future.
There is a compelling business case to take immediate action on climate change.

Why it matters
Businesses are critical in the fight against climate change as they are the source of most of the world’s emissions. The targets set by governments will never be achieved if businesses don’t move towards them. That is why we are calling on businesses to play their part.

There is a compelling business case to take immediate action on climate change.
- Reducing energy use and emissions can cut operating costs and drive efficiency.
- Companies demonstrating leadership on climate can improve their reputation and position with customers, suppliers, investors and regulators, as well as reduce their exposure to climate risks.
- Taking ambitious climate action can help businesses stay ahead of future policy changes and climate regulations.
- Companies can foster innovation in their organisations and attract engaged, talented staff who want to work for a business with strong values.
Fossil to Clean Campaign
Urging governments to phase out fossil fuels and accelerate renewable energy
WWF is a supporting partner of the We Mean Business Fossil to Clean campaign which aims to send a clear message that businesses are taking action to accelerate the deployment of clean technologies and reduce emissions – and that they can go even further with bold political leadership at COP28 and beyond.
Over 200 companies (representing US$1.5 trillion in annual revenue) have signed an open letter to governments to show their support for this shift from fossil to clean. Add your company’s name and be heard by global policymakers.

How we work with business
WWF Climate Business Network
The Climate Business Network provides companies with an opportunity to engage with WWF experts and other business leaders to gain the knowledge and guidance needed to take credible, ambitious climate action.
Science Based Targets initiative
The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI) and WWF. It enables businesses to set ambitious emissions reductions targets in line with the latest climate science. The SBTi focuses on accelerating companies across the world to halve emissions before 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions before 2050.
Renewable Thermal Collaborative
The Renewable Thermal Collaborative is a global coalition for companies, institutions, and governments committed to scaling up renewable heating and cooling at their facilities, dramatically cutting carbon emissions. RTC members recognize the growing demand and necessity for renewable heating and cooling and the urgent need to meet this demand in a manner that delivers sustainable, cost-competitive options at scale.
Climate Innovations
The WWF Climate Innovations Programme aims to increase the uptake and scale of the best possible climate innovations that can make a difference for our planet. We work with cities, companies and intermediaries in the innovation ecosystem to improve impact management and remove barriers.
Carbon Finance and Markets
WWF is working to influence and promote best practices for carbon finance and markets around the world. We offer guidance to help ensure that investment in protecting and restoring nature and in its ability to absorb and store carbon is credible, based on climate science and benefits to people and nature.
Sustainable Shipping
WWF is working to help ensure the shipping sector plays its part in limiting warming to 1.5°C. We do this by promoting science-based target setting and advocating for stronger climate action by corporations and industry regulators.
Decarbonising the steel sector
Some 7-8% of global emissions are linked to steel production, and the sector is expected to grow. WWF is working to align the steel sector with a 1.5°C future by influencing steel producers, steel users and the finance sector to take stronger action for our planet. As steel mills are operational for decades, it is crucial that all new investments are in line with the net zero 2050 pathway.
WWF special briefing for business
The IPCC Climate Report
It's been called a "survival guide for humanity" - so what does the latest IPCC climate report say, and what does it mean for businesses? This special briefing with Dr Stephanie Roe, WWF's Global Climate Lead Scientist and IPCC Lead Author, explains more.
The CDP-WWF temperature rating methodology
A temperature rating method for targets, corporates, and portfolios
The CDP-WWF temperature rating methodology is an open source methodology to assess the ambition of corporate emissions reduction targets, which translates these targets into a single, intuitive metric.
