The WWF is run at a local level by the following offices...
Puerto Quijarro
The city of Puerto Quijarro, with close to 16,000 inhabitants, is located in the Germán Busch province, in the department of Santa Cruz, in the Pantanal (a wetland ecoregion shared between Bolivia, Brazil and Paraguay), on the border with Brazil and neighboring the Brazilian city of Corumbá, located 640 km to the southeast of Santa Cruz de la Sierra (which was the first Bolivian city adhered to Earth Hour since 2008).

This municipality of the Bolivian Pantanal, where WWF has one of its two regional offices, also has jurisdiction over two protected areas in the region (San Matías and Otuquis). This is also the municipality in which important iron-steel mining projects will be developed making WWF’s activities in this area even more strategic.
The environmental management carried out by the Municipal Government of Puerto Quijarro is quite outstanding and has generated public policies while at the same time strengthened their institutional capacities and thus ensuring the conservation of the natural values of this important wetland: the Pantanal. This process, which has been underway for two years, is considered an example of municipal environmental management in the area of the Upper Paraguay River Watershed and has been duplicated in another three municipalities in the same watershed.
Under this context, the city of Puerto Quijarro has decided to join WWF’s invitation and participate in Earth Hour, and has arranged a special program for the event scheduled for March 28th, 2009 at 8:30 p.m., in coordination with the schools and general public. This way, the city of Puerto Quijarro continues to strengthen its leadership in municipal management with environmental responsibility.
