Covering a 6.2 sq km-area surrounded by a buffer zone, the Sanctuary holds approimately 266 species of fauna and 47 of flora. The existence of various ecosystems - mangroves, mudflats, lagoons, sabkhas, reed beds and shrub lands - contributes to rich biological diversity. Among the variety of plant and animal life found here, greater flamingos, against a background of lush green mangroves, are the most visible and attractive natural feature of Ras Al Khor.
The Sancuary's location in Dubai city offers enormous opportunities for nature education. Bird hides have been installed here for visitors to view plants, animals and habitats. The WWF- UAE Project Office with partners Dubai Municipality and National Bank of Dubai set up the facilities, including developing this publication.
