The Sea Turtle Nesting Project, Dominican Republic

The Sea Turtle Nesting Project is a multi-institutional effort based in the Dominican Republic, led by Grupo Jaragua who have been monitoring nesting by hawksbill and leatherback turtles on the beaches of the DR for many years. Headed by Dr Yolanda Leon, Grupo Jaragua have provided the local expertise and logistical support for the deployment of the units on the beaches of Saona Island.

The Marine Turtle Research Group (MTRG), University of Exeter, UK

The MTRG has specialists in many aspects of marine turtle ecology and has successfully tracked a variety of marine turtle species. Dr Jesus Tomas, in collaboration with the University of Valencia, Spain, is representing the MTRG in this project.


The tracking project is funded by the J.M. Kaplan Fund and the Spanish Ministry of Education and Sciences. Additional support is from AECID (The Araucaria program, Spanish Cooperation Program for Environmental Sustainability in Latin America) and the Foundation of the University of Valencia.
