TOOLS & PLATFORMS
ROUNDTABLE ON SUSTAINABLE PALM OIL

The Roundtable for Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) is a not-for-profit multi-stakeholder platform that unites stakeholders in the palm oil industry to develop and implement global standards for sustainable palm oil. In particular, WWF advocates the RSPO as a market-based tool for the production, trade, and consumption of Certified Sustainable Palm Oil (CSPO) against 2018 RSPO Principles and Criteria (P&C). When properly applied, these criteria can help to minimise the negative impact of palm oil cultivation on the environment and communities in palm oil producing regions.

PALM OIL INNOVATION GROUP

The Palm Oil Innovation Group (POIG) is a multi-stakeholder initiative that strives to achieve the adoption of responsible palm oil production and procurement practices by key players in the supply chain by developing and sharing a credible and verifiable benchmark that builds upon the RSPO, and creating and promoting innovations. POIG acts as a forum for open discussion and sharing of experience with innovations and improvements in: oil palm plantation practices, extraction mill management practices, responsible procurement, and product traceability and verification throughout the supply chain. POIG aims to demonstrate that by setting and implementing ambitious standards, the industry can break the link of palm oil production with deforestation, as well as human, land and labour rights violations.

EYES ON THE FOREST

Eyes on the Forest is a coalition of environmental non-governmental organisations that investigates those who clear forests and grab land they do not own in Indonesia. The coalition also informs those who buy products made from commodities grown on these lands (such as palm oil and pulp), and those parties that regulate the use of these lands. WWF Indonesia is a member of the Coalition.

HIGH CARBON STOCK APPROACH

The High Carbon Stock Approach is a methodology that distinguishes forest areas for protection from degraded lands with low carbon and biodiversity values that may be developed. The methodology was developed with the aim to ensure a practical, transparent, robust, and scientifically credible approach that is widely accepted to implement commitments to halt deforestation in the tropics, while ensuring the rights and livelihoods of local peoples are respected.

HIGH CONSERVATION VALUE APPROACH

High Conservation Value (HCV) areas are of outstanding importance due to their high environmental, socio-economic, biodiversity, or landscape values. The HCV Resource Network has developed the High Conservation Value Approach, a three-step methodology that helps stakeholders identify and protect HCVs primarily in prospective forestry and agricultural plantations. It is referenced as a tool to achieve several UN Sustainable Development Goals, meet corporate sustainability commitments, and ensure responsible investments in forestry and agriculture globally.

ACCOUNTABILITY FRAMEWORK INITIATIVE

The Accountability Framework is a set of common definitions, norms, and guidelines for delivering on companies' ethical supply chain commitments. The Accountability Framework is intended to be applied directly by companies and their service providers to help guide the establishment, implementation and monitoring of commitments.
