Developing and Promoting Sustainable Nature-Based Tourism in the Coral Triangle is an initiative being implemented by WWF through funding from the Australian Government. The initiative’s goal is to assist the six countries of the Coral Triangle Initiative on Coral Reefs, Fisheries and Food Security (CTI-CFF) to develop and/or accelerate a long-term approach to more sustainable nature-based tourism.
Through a series of consultations with numerous stakeholders, analysis and workshops, potential sites for Sustainable Tourism Development were identified in Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and Timor–Leste.
The destination plan series of reports is the result of an 18–month collaboration between the Coral Triangle Sustainable Nature–based Tourism Project (led by WWF and funded by the Australian Government) and a broad range of organizations, groups and individuals in the three selected countries.
As much as possible, the plans, ideas and recommendations contained within these documents have been verified and tested with local, on–the– ground experts – and are also based on the in–depth experience of the Tourism Consulting Team involved in the broader Project and a variety of Tourism best practice examples from around the world.
The aim of these destination plans is to help unlock sustainable Nature and Adventure–based Tourism throughout these coastal nations in the hope that it can start to play a significant and growing role in a brighter and more sustainable social, economic and cultural future for the Coral Triangle region.
