Furcifer belalandaensis is a chameleon species endemic to the rural commune of Belalanda in the district of Toliara II, in the Region Atsimo Andrefana.

The NGO “Madagasikara Voakajy" has been conducting a study in close collaboration with WWF since 2009. The objective is to monitor this endemic species, especially within the new protected area PK-32 Ranobe. Local guides were also participating in the survey.

Furcifer belalandaensis (Sangoritan'i Belalanda), belongs to five species of reptiles which are extremely threatened by extinction. The other are blue-tailed day Gecko Phelsuma Antanosy, the flat-tailed tortoise Pyxis planicauda, Paroedura masobe, another gecko, and finally the big-headed turtle Erymnochelys madagascariensis.

Furcifer belalandaensis is very rare and endangered. But a very important decision was taken by the authorities of the Rural Municipality Belalanda, led by the Mayor, Mr. Bien-Aime Fanampia. They decided to prohibit collection, transportation and trade of Furcifer belalandaensis.

In the "International Year of Biodiversity", such an initiative is highly welcome because it reflects a willingness of local communities to preserve species and the biodiversity of their region and, consequently, throughout Madagascar.

In line with this decision, information days are periodically organized by various local actors to raise awareness among the population, especially young people. Two local groups are involved, the Association for the Protection of the forest and wildlife ( Fikambanana Miaro ny Ala sy ny Biby) and the Peasant Association for Environmental Protection (Fikambanan'ny Tantsaha Miaro ny Tontolo Iainana). Moreover, these associations promote reforestation and social mobilization activities for students in primary and secondary class.
