Another new Locally Protected Area established

17.4 percent of the Mongolian territory is under state special protection, whereas 33.7 percent of its territory is under special local protection or totally an area occupying of 52.7 ha land in 1218 locations is covered by protection. However, one more locally protected area was established in last July. Presidium Meeting of the Citizen Representatives of Dadal soum, Khentii aimag has decided after discussions to cover under special local protection for duration of 15 years under the status of natural reserve an area around Agats, Kheriin Khondii and Gilber. The area covered constitutes an important habitat and migration route for local deer, roedeer, wild boar, antelope, fox, corsac fox, wolf etc. Mongolian gazelle winters in this area. Also area is the home to pine forest, endangered flora and birds. “Kherkhon-Bayankhaan Foundation” has been contracted to be responsible for the management of the Agatsh-Kher locally protected area.
