The Minister of Forestry Deliver Forest Village Working Area Assignment
The Minister of Forestry, Dr. H. Zulkifli Hasan, SE, MM., submitted three Forest Village Working Area Assignments to the Sintang Vice District Drs. Ignasius Juan.
This submission coincided with a working visit minister of forestry to District Sintang, and gathering with the Sintang governments that came from religious figures, public figures, students at Sintang District. The forest village that submitted were the forest village in Rasau Village (5.850 ha) Jasa Village (2,100 ha) and Ensaid Panjang Villlage (355,597 ha).
WWF Indonesia had a part in mentoring the initiation of the forest village in the Jasa and Rasau villages in collaboration with TITIAN Foundation since 2009. While the forest village in the Ensaid Panjang Village was accompanied by the PRCF Foundation. Rudi Zapariza, Project Leader of Sintang-Melawi from WWF Indonesia, explained, 'Mentoring is conducted in the form of study documentation on activities for the community, the area identification, facilitate the establishment of forest management agency village, policy advocacy, forest village management workshop, facilitation of preparation of the work plan and the preparation of regulation for village forest institution'.
In his speech, Zulkifli Hasan exposed some problems of forests and forestry are still often occurring in Indonesia, such as; exploitation of forest and land, as well as a land conflict. “The impact could be smog, landslide, flood which resulted in great loss of economically and socially”, he said.
Zulkifli explained further that there has been a fundamental paradigm shift in terms of forestry. Previous practices of concession forests dominated by companies that have management and a fairly large capital which caused the people do not have access to manage and benefit from the existence of the forest. Instead, this time, as much as possible should be community-based forest management.
Related to Forest Village Working Area that have been submitted, The Minister hoped that the forest village can managed well for the community welfare, yet still maintain and keep the quality of its forests. Additionally, the forest villages which have walked with the work plan is expected to be converted into a community based forest for others.
