WWF's Koen de Rijck talks about the rich cultural landscapes in the Danube-Carpathian region.

Mountain meadows in the Carpathian mountains of Romania or Slovakia; wetland meadows in the floodplains of the Danube River -- these are just two examples of the rich cultural landscapes that exist in the Danube-Carpathian region.

Such "High Nature Value Farmland" areas have been cultivated over centuries, creating rich habitats that are home to a wealth of plants and animals. But changing rural economies and land use are putting pressure on many of these areas.

Click here to hear Koen de Rijck describe these nature values, the threats they face, and how to address these challenges.

WWF's Arno Mohl talks about the confluence of the Drava, Mura and Danube Rivers -- one of the richest riverine areas in Europe.

The Drava-Mura wetlands, starting in Austria and passing through Slovenia, Hungary and Croatia to touch the Danube in Serbia, are home to a tremendous diversity of fish and wildlife. In recent years, however, the rivers and their rich wetlands have come under significant pressure from gravel quarrying, channeling and dam construction.

Click here to hear Arno Mohl describe the area's exceptional values, the challenges it faces as well as some good reasons for optimism regarding the Drava's future.
