Welcome to the Macroeconomics Program

Thank you for visiting the website of the WWF Macroeconomics for Sustainable Development Program Office (MPO). Based in the WWF-US headquarters in Washington, DC, the MPO works at the interface of development and environment. The program was established by WWF in 1991 to elevate the environmental dimensions in global economic and development policy and practices and to bring technical, analytical and policy advocacy skills to support WWF’s field programs in their efforts to create supportive economic, political and social conditions for conservation.

The Focus of our Work

The MPO believes that a healthy environment is necessary for the well-being of society, people and businesses, and that it is a critical component of social development and economic growth. One of the main challenges for society today is to manage the competing human demands on land, water, soil and vegetation without undermining crucial ecosystem functions. This raises the need for a sustained effort on the part of policy makers and their constituents to rethink and redefine traditional measures of economic growth, wellbeing, equity and sustainability.

As such, much of our work is focused on building partnerships with the aim to promote public policy measures that are meaningful, creative, and provide real solutions to environmental challenges while recognizing the importance of social and economic development, and in many places where we work in contributing to the poverty reduction. Through a combination of these strategic partnerships, joint projects and advocacy efforts, the MPO mobilizes resources, informs conservation strategies and activities, and influences development institutions and governments and their respective policies, practices and investments in support of WWF’ mission.
