Wetlands, solutions to climate change

Posted on January, 29 2019

Every year, World Wetlands Day is celebrated on February 2, commemorating the signing of the Ramsar Convention on wetlands in 1971. In Madagascar, and since 1999, we now have 20 Ramsar sites.
As a source of clean water and food, wetlands are an environmental resource that must be protected to ensure the survival of humans, plants and animals that live there and around. For instance, mangrove forests retain 30% more carbon than terrestrial forests; they protect the coast from erosion and serve as a nursery for fishes and shellfishes. Coral reefs slow down tsunamis and reduce wave strength during cyclones.

In 2019, we celebrate wetlands as solutions to climate change. The Ministry in charge of the environment invites us in the garden of Antaninarenina, Antananarivo, for an exhibition on February 1st.  The town of Morondava, in the west of Madagascar will reforest the Kimony mangroves on Saturday, February 2nd from 9am. All scheduled activities are open to public.
