A WWF report predicts a bright future for renewable energy in Latin America and the Caribbean based on impressive achievements in exploiting enviable natural resources. Green Energy Leaders cites Costa Rica’s target of 100% renewable power by 2021, Uruguay’s favourable energy policy and Brazil’s expanding wind energy sector as just some of the successes contributing to the region’s status as a clean energy technology hub. With 20% of its electricity expected to come from non-hydro renewables such as solar, wind and geothermal by 2050, and research showing that capacity could supply over 20 times future demand, the region is poised to become a clean energy paragon. “The question is if the world will follow suit?” asks the report’s author Tabaré Currás, “Hopefully, yes”
