WWF has signed a three-year environmental protection deal with Madagascar National Parks (MNP) to protect more than 17 million hectares of land and marine by promoting better farming practices as well as combating deforestation. The partnership will enable WWF and MNP to jointly look for funding, and design programmes for conservation and biodiversity protection which will cover about 29 percent of Madagascar's total surface area. WWF Country Director and CEO of MNP noted that the partnership will promote conservation of biodiversity and development of sustainable solutions that benefits local populations as well as preservation of the 250,000 and animal species in Madagascar – over 80% of which are found only on this highly biodiverse island.
