The Cambodian Government has designated a 56 km section of flooded forest in the mainstream of the Mekong River to safeguard key threatened species and fisheries resources. Situated in northern Cambodia, the area includes tall riverine forest, waterways and islands and supports iconic species such as the Irrawaddy dolphin. WWF has worked with the authorities and local communities to build awareness and establish sustainable livelihoods to help ensure that critical resources such as fish and timber are sustainably managed for local communities, and to reduce pressure on this area which is threatened by damaging and illegal fishing, mining and logging.
