Bhutan’s National Assembly unanimously ratified the Paris Climate Agreement today, reinforcing the nation’s contribution and continued leadership in climate action. Last December in Paris, France, countries agreed to cut emissions in a bid to keep the global average rise in temperatures below 2°C. The Paris deal is the world's first comprehensive climate agreement. Presenting the Paris Agreement to the assembly, the minister of agriculture and forests said that the agreement would benefit Bhutan with mechanisms and support for adaptation to the impacts of climate change. Parliament members agreed saying that it was imperative to ratify the Paris Agreement at the earliest so that it compliments Bhutan’s efforts in fighting climate change thus far. Although Bhutan is is one of the few countries in the world to have negative carbon emissions, members of parliament expressed concerns that “if we don’t act now, big problem awaits our future generations from climate change”.
