Members of the Steering Committee of the World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA)  from North America, Africa, Europe and Asia have shown their interest on replicating the initiative led by REDPARQUES of the Declaration on Protected Areas and Climate Change in their regions. This idea was discussed during the last Steering Committee Meeting of the WCPA in Czech Republic.

Some of the aims of the meeting were to report the activities implemented during the past year and to define the future lines of action. Representatives of the NASCC Project and REDPARQUES, presented the process of development and negotiation of the Declaration on Protected Areas and Climate Change. Additional meetings were held with the Regional Vice-Presidents, with the support of the Commission’s specialist groups on climate change and natural solutions where they identified an interest to replicate the Declaration in other regions.  

During the meeting, representatives of the climate change specialist group of the Commission, expressed an interest to organize an event during the IUCN - World Conservation Congress in Hawai’i order to globalize the Declaration signed by 18 Latin American countries. The Declaration seeks to increase national and regional efforts to integrate protected areas and climate change strategies, and to include climate change criteria in the design and management of protected areas.
