Homeboyz Radio Office Invasion

This year we kicked off Earth Hour with a live radio broadcast dubbed ‘The Office Invasion’ with Homeboyz radio. The show aired in our offices on Friday 18th March 6 a.m. – 10 a.m.
Office Invasion is one of the hottest radio shows in town. The HBR breakfast team airs the entire breakfast show live from the offices as well as giving maximum visibility online mainly on Twitter.
Throughout the week Homeboyz hyped the listeners with Earth Hour clues and quizzes as well as Earth Hour radio ads.During the invasion, several WWF staff were interviewed and the listeners got to learn more about Earth Hour, the event on 19th and WWF-Kenya’s conservation work throughout the country.
There were exciting giveaways for listeners who correctly answered our Earth Hour trivia questions. The giveaways included solar products from Barefoot Power, meal vouchers from Serena & Sarova hotels, cocktail tickets from Hilton Nairobi and Earth Hour merchandise from WWF Kenya. Through the Homeboyz Radio Office invasion, we were able to make #EarthHourKE a trending topic on Twitter for 4 hours!

Green Energy Exhibition at Hilton Square

WWF-Kenya organized a clean energy exhibition at the Hilton Square, Nairobi. The event took place on Saturday 19th March from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. The theme was ‘Shine A Light On Climate Action’. Our main aim was to harness the collective power of the crowd to create the impact we know we can achieve by putting a spotlight on climate change.Media stations (KTN & K24) covered the exhibition and aired interviews with WWF staff, airing it during lunchtime news.The exhibitors who partnered with us included Barefoot Power Kenya Ltd, Burn Manufacturing, The Wildlife Foundation & Knights Energy. They were able to showcase their Earth friendly products during the green showcase.We had a number of interactive activities geared towards sensitizing people on the importance of recycling and reusing items. The challenges were: dunk challenge, dancing competition and signing of a climate change pledge wall. There were skaters who passed Earth Hour flyers to the passers-by.

Evening Cocktail

The Earth Hour evening cocktail commenced at 7 p.m. It was held at the Hilton Hotel pool area. It was an invite only event with high-level guests from government and leading companies and organizations that are geared towards eco friendly technologies. It was collaboration between WWF and the Hilton Hotel.The symbolic “lights off” happened at 8.30 p.m. local time and switched to renewable energy. During the hour, we were powered by solar lights courtesy of Barefoot Power Kenya Ltd. Prof. Judi Wakhungu, the Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, graced the occasion as the chief guest. WWF Regional Director for Africa, Fred Kumah and WWF Kenya CEO Mohamed Awer were also present at the event.Prof. Judi Wakhungu highlighted the importance of individuals getting involved in the conservation of our natural resources by making a commitment to climate change. This was a sentiment that was echoed by the speakers throughout the event.

Arts & Essay School Competition

WWF-Kenya in partnership with Wildlife Clubs of Kenya (WCK) rolled out a school arts and essay competition a few weeks prior to Earth Hour. The theme was ‘climate change’ with the title, ‘shine a light using renewable energy’. The theme was based upon the COP21 discussions that encourage the move from the use of fossil fuels and embracing clean and renewable energy. The competition was opened to class 8 pupils in 5 counties across Kenya. The counties included; Naivasha, Nairobi, Kwale, Narok and Lamu. Since children are the leaders of the future generation, it is important for us to encourage the culture of sustainable development from a young age. A total of 14 schools participated. Two winners from each of the schools were selected for best art and essay. The winners were awarded at the Earth Hour cocktail event with solar products from Barefoot Power Kenya Ltd and certificates of participation.
