Today, the UK's Environmental Audit Committee provided new evidence that indicates that EU membership has been beneficial to the environment. WWF welcomes this report and calls on both sides of the referendum debate to place greater emphasis on environmental issues.

Responding to the report entitled ‘EU and UK Environmental Policy’, WWF-UK Chief Executive David Nussbaum said:

“The referendum places the UK at an environmental crossroads. The choice we make could have profound consequences for the air we breathe, the coastlines and seas that sustain us and the countryside we love.  But to date environmental issues have barely been mentioned by the two camps.  It’s vital that people are presented with clear facts. This report makes the case that protection of our natural environment benefits from multilateral action co-ordinated across European countries.

“WWF calls on both sides of the referendum debate to spell out what they would do to help protect our natural environment that underpins our quality of life, so that people can make an informed choice on June 23rd.”
