Kathmandu, Nepal – On the occasion of International Mountain Day, WWF Nepal hosted the premiere of its major production, ‘The Ghost of the Mountains’ – a 24-minute video documentary based on a snow leopard collaring mission in Nepal in early 2014. The premiere was organized in association with the Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival.

Directed by Samir Jung Thapa, a young Nepalese film-maker, ‘The Ghost of the Mountains’ tells the story of a team of Nepali scientists, local community members and conservationists who work together to track and put a satellite collar on a snow leopard in Kangchenjunga Conservation Area. Set in the shadows of the world’s third highest peak, the film follows the team as they struggle to find one of nature’s most elusive big cats. Their mission to apply science to save snow leopards is ultimately about the intricate and inseparable ties that binds the fate of humans with that of the ghost of the mountains.

Anil Manandhar, Country Representative of WWF Nepal said: “International Mountain Day is being celebrated this year with the theme Promoting Mountain Products. ‘The Ghost of the Mountains’ is in essence a product from Nepal’s Himalayas through which we hope to build a conversation and raise greater consciousness to protect snow leopards. As ‘The Ghost of the Mountains’ travels beyond Nepal to reach out to new and increased audiences, we believe our local mountain communities will be the primary beneficiaries in the end whereby they are additionally inspired to continue protecting the elusive cat.”
