Forest and Climate Initiative -- Learning Session No. 3

You are invited to take part in a Learning Session on REDD+ Community Management Landscape Planning, hosted by WWF's global Forest and Climate Initiative. The session will explore lessons learned from WWF's Mai Ndombe landscape project in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and is designed to help participants determine what approaches/tools they can use to help communities develop their own management plans.

Local communities play an important role in landscape conservation and to achieving the Zero Net Deforestation and Forest Degredation (ZNDD) goal. While planning our landscape interventions, how can we make sure that community voices are heard and their aspirations included in bigger plans? We will explore approaches of working with communities in developing landscape management plans and highlight lessons from recent experiences in DRC's Mai Ndombe landscape.

The learning session objectives will be to answer the following questions:

  • What approaches/tools can we use to help communities develop their own management plans?
  • How can we ensure the ZNDD goal is compatible with community aspirations? And what happens if it's not?
  • What was learned from the WWF pilot experience in DRC?

When:  Wednesday, 27 June 2012, 16:00hrs CET

Presenters:

  • Alexander Belokurov (WWF International) – expert in landscape conservation and protected areas
  • Liza Higgins-Zogib (consultant, Switzerland) – expert in culture and development in conservation
