12-day Conference of Parties to the U.N. Convention on Biodiversity (CBD) started in Nagoya, Japan, with a clear message that human activity is killing the Earth’s capacity to sustain human well-being and the need for the conference to form a commitment to find a way to reverse this trend. WWF Mongolia also participated this meeting and succesfully organized a side event in Nagoya. “Today we had a side event, and according to people's opinion, it was very successful and more than 50 people came for it and quite a few people asked the questions about Mongolian conservation activities, keeping the event alive. Our event was very important and interesting because so many people came and actively participated” said B.Lkhagvasuren, WWF Mongolia Conservation director.
At the heart of the discussions is a draft strategic plan to guide the convention's implementation for the next 10 years.The ambitious plan includes more than 20 targets on issues such as public awareness, subsidy reform and pollution control. It has been drafted in the belief that biodiversity plays a critical role in human wellbeing and poverty reduction.The conference participants listened to several speeches and will negotiate a new plan on biodiversity for the next decade, which will be taken to the world leaders on Oct. 27.
