Enabling the UAE’s Energy Transition
 
Following on from the Future Energy Lab 2017, the event where the UAE National Energy Plan 2050 was approved and announced, the Ministry of Energy and Industry, has partnered with Emirates Wildlife Society in association with WWF (EWS-WWF) to develop a policy report with recommendations for increased renewable energy use in the UAE, in line with the nation’s target of 44% renewable energy by 2050.
 
This joint policy report which is sponsored by Khidmah, entitled ‘Enabling the UAE’s Energy Transition’, puts forth recommendations for federal and Emirate-level policies that are geared towards increasing deployment of renewable energy, in line with the targets set by the UAE National Energy Plan 2050.
 
Voices from different sectors were captured in the report to find the best solutions to support the country in achieving its renewable energy and sustainability goals.
 
This report forms part of a long-term partnership between Ministry of Energy and Industry and EWS-WWF, which seeks to enable dialogue between the public sector, business and civil society to find the best incentives and policy options, now and in the long-term, to achieve the federal renewable energy targets.
 
Overall, this project represents a stepping-stone and is intended as the beginning of a cascade of events to enable the UAE’s energy transition, including stakeholder collaboration and investment in innovative and locally relevant policies and technologies.
 
Key report findings:
 

• Continue developing an effective renewable energy policy pathway, which sets review milestones and interim targets, building on the Ministry of Energy and Industry’s current efforts;
• Create open and fair competition between technologies;
• Continue creating a pathway for CO2 emissions reductions to complement existing renewable energy targets;
• Support the development and testing of emerging technologies such as seasonal storage, thermal cold storage for air conditioning and electric vehicles;
• Boost interconnection, and creating an efficient trading framework between the UAE utilities;
• Introduce and promote rooftop solar PV and streamlined means of connecting to a local distribution network;
• Promote new green energy policies and funding mechanisms focused on customers; and
• Encourage clean energy research and development by government and private sector companies, as well as academic institutions, for locally relevant solutions.
