Over 50 conservation experts will be at work on 260,000 ha of Natura 2000 sites in the heart of Transylvania this summer, conducting a census of birds, plants and animals in order to compile an inventory, essential for the management plan of the Podisul Hartibaciului-Tarnava Mare-Olt area of Romania. The management plan is due to be finalized in 2015 and is part of a project funded by the Environment Operational Programme of the European Commission. Implemented by WWF, the project will ensure the conservation of species and habitats of community and national importance in the heart of Romania.

“An inventory of all species and habitats from the Natura 2000 sites is very important for the development of a minimum set of management measures for the area”, said Project Manager Florentina Florescu of WWF.

The first inventory stage will end in November 2011. During this stage, 87 plant species, 23 mammal species, 55 bird species and 10 reptile species will be evaluated. The inventory procedure for the entire area of 260,000 ha will be completed in August 2013.

The inventory activities will take place in three Romanian counties - Brasov, Sibiu and Mures.

The project “For nature and local communities - the basis for a Natura 2000 integrated management in Hartibaciu -Tarnava Mare area” is implemented in partnership with ADEPT Foundation, Mihai Eminescu Trust, Regional Environment Protection Agency Sibiu Region 7 Center and Ecotur Sibiu Association.

The project area includes the following Natura 2000 sites: Podisul Hartibaciului, Sighisoara Tarnava Mare, Padurea de stejar si gorun de la Dosul Fanatului, Padurea de stejar si gorun de pe Dealu Purcaretul, Oltul Mijlociu-Cibin-Hartibaciu, Stejarii seculari Breite.
