Establishment of the Javakheti Protected Areas

In December 2010 the final decision about establishment of the Javakheti Protected Areas (16,568ha) in Georgia was made by the Government of Georgia. The Javakheti ecosystem is recognized as a globally important staging and breeding ground for migratory and resident bird species, of which several are listed as endangered in the IUCN Red Data Book.
In December 2010 the final decision about establishment of the Javakheti Protected Areas (16,568ha) in Georgia was made by the Government of Georgia. The Javakheti ecosystem is recognized as a globally important staging and breeding ground for migratory and resident bird species, of which several are listed as endangered in the IUCN Red Data Book.This was the conclusive important step before the legal establishment of Javakheti National Park and five wetland sanctuaries by the Parliament of Georgia. From Armenian side the Arpi Lake National Park has been already established. Finally the transboundary protected areas between Georgia and Armenia will be created with mutual vision and objectives. Since very beginning, WWF is initiator and supporter of these processes both in Armenia and Georgia.
