List of Eligible and Prohibited Wooden Products for Export Disseminated

More than 80 representatives from Industry and Commerce sectors nationwide and businesspeople met at a meeting held on Thursday in Vientiane to equip themselves with broader knowledge of the Decision on the Approval of the List of Eligible and Prohibited Wooden Products for Export.

(KPL) More than 80 representatives from Industry and Commerce sectors nationwide and businesspeople met at a meeting held on Thursday in Vientiane to equip themselves with broader knowledge of the Decision on the Approval of the List of Eligible and Prohibited Wooden Products for Export.

“The meeting aimed to make sure its participants have proper knowledge of the implementation of the decision, and to determine future directions for wood industry development in the country, especially the improvement of quality, and increasing numbers and diversities of wooden products,” said Director General of the Industry and Handicraft Department, Ministry of Industry and Commerce (MoIC), Mr Manohak Rasachack who chaired the meeting on the forest, trade and knowledge platform.

The decision, issued on Oct 3, 2016 by the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, specifies the list of eligible and prohibited wooden products for export to facilitate implementation by government authorities.

Wooden products eligible for export consist of 12 categories: (1) wooden briquettes and pallets; (2) wooden charcoal; (3) wooden parquet and interior flooring; (4) plywood; (5) wooden handle products; (6) builders’ joinery and carpentry of wood; (7) other articles of wood; (8) wooden furniture; (9) bamboo and rattan products; (10) spilt poles; piles, pickets, stakes of wood and sawn wood; (11) wood wool and wood flour; and (12) chip wood.

Wooden products prohibited from export also consist of 12 categories: (1) columns; (2) column and laminated beams; (3) large tables and chairs made from a pieces of timber; (4) large cutting boards; (5) large planted woods; (6) other black charcoals; (7) S2S, S4S E4E decking; (8) mounded timber products; (9) truck body joinery; (10) coffins; (11) balustrades; and (12) stair rails and laminated stair rails.

The Industry and Handicraft Department, Ministry of Industry and Commerce had also issued the Instruction on the List of Eligible and Prohibited Wooden Products for Export No.1009/DoIH.PSD, dated Oct 18, 2016 to extend the above decision.

The instruction further clarifies definitions, categories, types, and sources of eligible and prohibited wooden products for export.

Supported by World Wide Fund For Nature (WWF-Laos), and Responsible Asia Forestry and Trade (RAFT) the meeting was organised by the Industry and Handicrafts Department, MoIC.
