Kathmandu, Nepal – A total of 6,000 signatures of Kathmandu residents urging action on climate change were submitted to the US Embassy in Nepal and to the government of Nepal to mark the second anniversary of the Kyoto Protocol Enforcement Day.

The signatures were a culmination of the 2006 Youth Climate Change Programme, which was implemented by students from 13 colleges in Kathmandu from July 2006 to February 2007 with support from WWF Nepal and Clean Energy Nepal. A special public awareness raising initiative on 21 December 2006 by 38 young Climate Volunteers resulted in the collection of 6,000 signatures from valley residents who agreed on the urgency of addressing climate change.

On 20 February 2007, the signatures bearing the message "Sign the Kyoto Protocol" were submitted to the US Embassy to highlight the fact that the United States, a major polluter, has yet to ratify the Kyoto Protocol. The government of Nepal was also given the signatures to urge the necessity of plans and policies in the context of a changing climate.

On 16 February, the Climate Change Network Nepal also organized a special screening of "An Inconvenient Truth".

Following the success of the college level climate change awareness programme, Clean Energy Nepal and the WWF Nepal Program will carry out another awareness program targeting to wider audience in Nepal.
