Do you know that there are more than 280 birds species in Madagascar? And of these 280 species, about 80 are migratory. This great information was shared during the World Migratory Bird Day celebrations.

WWF Madagascar contributes actively to the migratory birds’ conservation by promoting and protecting wetlands that are critical habitats for these species. The organization has initiated a doubling of Ramsar sites since 2015. Currently, Madagascar has five additional wetlands of international importance. There are five others nominated. This Ramsar label ensures the protection of these areas through the exchange of good practices and support from international partners.

On the occasion of the Migratory Bird Day celebration, students were able to learn about the biodiversity richness of these five Ramsar sites through WWF poster exhibitions. And especially the birds that live there, including the Madagascar Pochard. These sites harbor remarkable biological diversity and are at the same time very threatened.

The event was organized by the Ministry of the Environment, Ecology, and Forests at the University of Antananarivo on 12 May.
