Environmental Solutions to Take Center Stage at World Conservation Congress

Posted on August, 30 2016

More than 6,000 conservation professionals from around the world are gathering this week in Hawaii for the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) World Conservation Congress.
The Congress takes place every four years, bringing together government officials, business leaders, and representatives from indigenous groups, scientists, academics, influencers, and NGOs to identify evolving trends, current threats, and innovative solutions to our planet’s most pressing environmental problems.

In advance of the meeting, WWF International issued the following statement from Director General Marco Lambertini:

“We are living in a time of unprecedented risk, but also one with an unparalleled opportunity to define a better future for our planet. With the world’s wildlife cut in half in less than a generation, and the impacts of climate change growing more severe, the Congress is a unique forum for fostering consensus around our collaborative efforts to protect nature and communities.

“NGO, government, and private sector leaders must work together to define the future of conservation and advance an integrated agenda that addresses its greatest threats. At the Congress, we look forward to scaling up bold solutions to the challenges imperiling nature’s future through powerful, unconventional alliances which embrace environmental and development issues concurrently; boosting innovation and embracing disruption; and directing our focus on systemic change in the key sectors driving environmental degradation.

“The threats facing nature are immense. Now more than ever, we need solutions that are even greater.”
