Background:

WWF-DRC has entered into a partnership agreement with ICCN (Institute de Congolese pour le Conservation du Salonga) for the co-management of Salonga National Park in central west DRC. Salonga is Africa’s largest forest protected area and second largest in the world after the Amazon. Salonga is also a World Heritage Site and is one of the most important areas of intact forest in the world and home to forest elephant and bonobo, both under severe threat.
 
Salonga is only accessible by light aircraft and on the many rivers that characterize Salonga. There is presently a rapidly developing Park HQ at Monkoto with new offices, workshops and housing for the 50 plus staff based there. In the park itself there are 6 sectors each requiring the construction of Station Posts with basic facilities and communications systems.
 
This is a very exciting opportunity to be at the forefront of conservation in one of the most important parks in Africa; it is also one of the most challenging in terms of logistics and its relative isolation.
 
The WWF/ICCN partnership is seeking a very capable individual who appreciates the challenges of working in a remote African National Park and can find appropriate solutions that keep the field staff operational and therefore better able to protect the parks resources.

Location:

The position is based at Monkoto, Democratic Republic of Congo.
Duration: One (1) year.

Main responsibilities:

The Manager of Infrastructure services has the responsibility to ensure all technical infrastructures at the project are well managed and systems are effectively running.
In this respect his/her core assignment will focus on:
 

• Mechanical asset/ motorized engine management
• Construction
• Repairs and maintenance
• Communication (Satellite Communication System, VHF, HF equipment)
• Power supply and cold chain (installation of 220 volt AC system and its maintenance) 

Profile:

Required qualifications and experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Technology Management, Mechanical Engineering, or other related area of study.
• Minimum of 5 years of infrastructure technical experience working in Africa, with at least 2 years in a supervisory capacity.
• Demonstrated knowledge of, and experience in implementing leading-edge appropriate and sustainable infrastructure technologies.
• Professional certifications within infrastructure-related areas, while not a minimum requirement, would be highly desirable.

 
Required Knowledge and skills

• Ability to think strategically but willingness to handle, first hand, the mechanics of technology services required by the business.
• Outstanding leadership, teamwork, mentoring and development abilities in conjunction with Organization standards.
• Decisiveness, good judgment, analytical/math aptitude and problem solving skills to act with authority and take risks in an environment with little direction from others. 
• Proven experience in vehicle mechanics, electricity, ICT, communication HF and VHF communication system (would be an advantage), building construction in very remote locations and road construction would be an advantage.
• Proven understanding of logistics and procurement procedures.
• Ability to organize and priorities workload, using initiative when appropriate.
• Excellent command of French and English.
