Over half a million people have called on the European Commission (EC) to save Europe’s nature laws – by far the largest response to a public consultation in the history of the European Union (EU). In May, environmental organizations including WWF launched the ‘Nature Alert’ e-action campaign in response to the EC’s ongoing ‘fitness check’ of the EU Birds and Habitats Directives, potentially undermining decades of European nature conservation. The campaign called both for retention and improved implementation of the laws which protect over 1,000 key species and 27,000 natural sites.
