WWF-Armenia in the frames of the EU funded regional project “Increasing the Resilience of Forest Ecosystems against Climate Change in the Southern Caucasus through Forest Transformation” organized a field visit to a pilot site on November 19, 2014. The visited site is located in Gugark Forest Enterprise of “Hayantar” SNCO (nearby Spitak town, Lori Province). The aim of the visit was to demonstrate the results of the field activities and to provide information about the project’s on-going activities.

The field visit was attended by about 40 participants from various state entities, local governmental bodies, educational institutions, international organizations and media. The representatives of the RA Ministry of Agriculture, “Hayantar” SNCO, EU Delegation to Armenia and GIZ were present among the participants. The participants discussed the project results so far as well as the possibilities of their replication in other respective areas.

The project in the Caucasus is implemented by WWF and it is aimed at increasing the resilience of monoculture forest stands against climate change. The overall objective of the project is to mitigate climate change impacts and improve biodiversity and livelihoods of local populations.

In Armenia two pilot sites with the total area of 150 ha located in Gugarq and Noyemberyan Forest Enterprises of “Hayantar” SNCO (respectively Lori and Tavush Provinces) are being transformed into more resilient and “close to nature” forests. The project field activities started in spring 2012  and will be finalized in autumn 2014.
