A new funding agreement has been signed to help secure the long-term protection of the Amazon rainforest in Brazil. The Brazilian government, WWF and partners have committed $215 million for the Amazon Region Protected Area (ARPA) programme – the world’s largest tropical forest conservation initiative in the world’s biggest tropical forest -- and  guarantees two decades of funding for the creation and management of 60 million hectares of protected areas. The ARPA programme, which aims to permanently protect 15% of the Amazon, an area the size of Spain, currently supports 95 protected areas, covering 52 million hectares.
