Protected areas of Altai-Sayan ecoregion have its management plans

Protected areas are one of the most effective tools for conserving species and natural habitats. They also contribute to the livelihoods and well-being of local communities and society at large. In this regard, Mongolia has promised to the world that 30 percent of its territory shall be covered by special protection by 2015.

In this regard, Mongolia has promised to the world that 30 percent of its territory shall be covered by special protection by 2015. Currently, 17.4 percent of its territory has been taken under protection. Out of that 28 protected areas are located in Altai Sayan Ecoregion.
Management plan is important in improving protection of specially protected areas in addition to covering territories by special protection. In accordance with this, Ministry of Environment and Green Development has selected WWF-Mongolia to provide advisory services and improve management plans of 10 protected areas (PA) that in Altai-Sayan Ecoregion. In accordance with the contract, a training was provided to staffs of PA administrations in August and September. Seven staffs of five PA administrations were trained in new methodology of developing management plans. During the training a draft management plan was prepared in collaboration with PA administration staffs rangers. Currently, the participants are working on refining draft management plan and it is expected to be finalized by the end of November.
