During a state visit to Tanzania in July, Unites States President Barack Obama said poaching and trafficking are threatening Africa’s wildlife and have expanded into coordinated slaughter commissioned by armed gangs and criminal syndicates. He announced a suite of measures, including an interagency Presidential Task Force on Wildlife Trafficking, to support anti-poaching, regional law enforcement, and reducing illicit trade and demand. Countries like Tanzania are losing their wildlife resources and the lives of rangers and law enforcement personnel, requiring international intervention. WWF is calling on all governments – especially those of demand countries such as China, Vietnam, Thailand and the US to clamp down on the illegal trade and demand.
