Lac Lobeke (220,000 hectares) has been declared as special protected area. This is part of a tri-national conservation area stretching into the Central African Republic and Congo, which is a virtually intact reservoir of biological diversity, harbouring forest elephant, buffalo, antelope, lowland gorilla, and chimpanzee.
