SOUTH AFRICA - Creation of the Cape Peninsula National Park

Posted on June, 01 1998

The newly created Cape Peninsula National Park was designated as a Gift to the Earth by the South African President Nelson Mandela. The new 30,000 hectares park includes the world famous Table Mountain and stretches 40 km to Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope.

Home to some 2,285 plant species (125 of which are endemic and many threatened), the park will protect the Cape Floral Kingdom - one of the world's richest areas of plant life.
