WWF has worked in Chile for many decades. In the 70's it supported the establishment of the Protected Areas System of the State (SNASPE), as well promoting various capacity building measures. During the 80s it also helped pioneer scientific work on native deer populations and the endemic huemul pudu. In 2002 WWF's presence was cemented with the establishment of an office for the Valdivian Ecoregion, in the city of Valdivia.
