JANUARY 11th, 2020:  The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Bhutan organized a 6-day environmental education camp called the Our Living Planet Camp at Shengana Lower Secondary School, Punakha from 6th to 11th January.
The Camp was designed as a fun-filled nature camp that would offer a holistic environmental education program with the aim to enable the youth participants to experience and comprehend nature in a stimulating way, both physically and mentally, and motivate them to take sustainable action.

Some of the activities organized at the Camp included a citizen science program that consisted of multiple biodiversity surveys, bird-watching, critical-thinking workshops, screenings of the Our Planet documentary episodes,  adventure activities such as hiking and rafting and numerous games.

“Our expectation after the Camp is that these young Bhutanese have an elevated appreciation and love for nature, raised environmental consciousness, and a greater motivation to lead a sustainable movement in their community,” said Sonam Yangchen, Communications Officer at WWF Bhutan. “We are therefore encouraging the participants to organize a post-camp project in their respective schools or communities to demonstrate their new capacities as young environmental ambassadors who are capable of influencing conservation action”.  

The participants were selected from WWF Bhutan’s Wild Wisdom Quiz program and the Bhutan Youth Development Fund’s YVIA (Young Volunteers in Action) network. 5 international participants from WWF India and WWF Hong Kong also joined the Camp. The Camp was funded by WWF-UK’s Our Planet Education Program which develops educational resources designed to support the Our Planet series, a documentary series from Netflix—created in collaboration with Silverback Productions and WWF—which features jaw-dropping nature stories, grounded in the best science, and highlighting the most pressing challenges facing nature today..
