WWF Global Forest & Trade Network
WWF's Global Forest & Trade Network (GFTN) recognises that an effective response to the devastation of natural forest is to turn the global marketplace into a positive force to save the world’s most valuable and threatened forests.

The GFTN—a WWF-led partnership—links more than 300 companies, communities, NGOs, and entrepreneurs in more than 30 countries around the world. The goal is to create a new market for environmentally responsible forest products.
Equitable payment for watershed services
Payment for Environmental Services (PES) is a mechanism whereby those who ‘provide’ environmental services in conserving natural ecosystems are compensated by the beneficiaries, or the ‘users’ of the service. This compensation encourages and subsidises conservation efforts while improving community livelihoods.

WWF, CARE and the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) are partnering to develop an approach to PES that is suitable for the Payment for Watershed Services (PWS) with an emphasis on balancing poverty reduction efforts with watershed conservation and social justice.

The project under WWF-Indonesia’s West Kalimantan Programme is located in the Mendalam sub-watershed, in the buffer zone of Betung Kerihun National Park (BKNP), Kapuas Hulu District and involves five neighbouring villages. Using a multi-stakeholder approach, this project aims to implement payment services for water catchment area conservation that will support natural resource management by providing better livelihoods to communities living upstream of the water catchment areas.

The Borneo Initiative
The Borneo Initiative (TBI) is an independent, non-profit organisation established in 2008 to promote the responsible management of forests in Indonesia. Together with their partners they promote the use of certified timber and create sustainable forestry, making it possible to prevent deforestation and forest degradation.

TBI’s mission is to join all stakeholders - forest concessions, governments, corporations, NGOs - in an international platform and enable them to jointly work towards sustainable forest management, according to international (FSC) and national (LEI) certification criteria.
