“Earth hour -2016” ecological campaign was held

"Earth Hour -2016" being a massive ecological public event in the history of humanity were joined by more than 7,000 cities from 178 countries. In the action which falls on March 19 this year, more than 350 famous buildings of the world turned-off the facade and unnecessary lights for an hour while giving a support to the campaign.
"Earth Hour – 2016" ecological campaign was held with organization of World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF) Azerbaijan Office and GREEN BAKU Youth Ecological Union on March 19, 2016. Ganja, Lankaran and Guba towns were also joined to the campaign this year alongside with Baku city."Earth Hour -2016" being a massive ecological public event in the history of humanity were joined by more than 7,000 cities from 178 countries. In Baku city Baku City Executive Power, Government House, the Maiden Tower, Shirvanshahs Palace, the National Academy of Sciences (ANAS), the UN office in Azerbaijan, Azercell, ASAN, the buildings of Hilton, Intourist and Baku Boulevard hotels joined the climate change actions while saving power for one-hour.
Meanwhile, several restaurants in the city for the first time celebrated "Earth Hour" event with power saving measures and presenting special healthy food products and acoustic music program.
The participants of the event in front of the ANAS building lightened candles in the shape of the "60+" the logo for Earth Hour campaign on 19 March 2016 at 20.30-21. 30. Meanwhile, the winners “The most creative candle" contest that was announced in advance were awarded with certificates and valuable prizes.
It should be noted that volunteers of Let’s do it Azerbaijan, “BIR” Volunteer Program and Association of Scouts of Azerbaijan were also joined to this year’s event.
At the end of campaing, all participated organizations were awarded with Certification by WWF-Azerbaijan office.
“Earth Hour” campaign has firstly been launched by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in Australia in 2007. The aim of the campaign is to draw public attention to the concerns of the Climate Change. During “Earth Hour” actions, facade lights of famous buildings are turned-off in the big cities for an hour and the attendants promote energy saving through this symbolic action. As known, greenhouse gases, which emitted to the atmosphere during the process of electricity production, are considered one of the key reasons of the climate change. In this regard, during “Earth Hour” actions sustainable use of energy is whirled.
