Human activities are driving catastrophic biodiversity loss and exacerbating already dangerous levels of climate change. In 2021, Parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) will agree on a post-2020 global biodiversity framework which has the potential to transform our world to become nature positive by 2030, but this will only be possible with a high level of political commitment. The EU operates as a single bloc at the CBD and therefore it must come forward and lead the way in the biodiversity framework through strong commitments and clear targets and goals to tackle the main drivers of biodiversity loss and decrease our ecological footprint.

For truly transformative change, all leaders at the highest level of state or government must come together to develop and implement the biodiversity framework. WWF’s latest call to leaders, Nature positive by 2030, highlights the key elements that must be in the post-2020 biodiversity framework and the role all government ministers must play in halting and reversing biodiversity loss by 2030.
