With more than one million geckos estimated to be traded annually, effective implementation of this newly adopted listing could help, tokay geckos benefit from increased monitoring and regulation of trade.
In response to the CITES committee decision to include Tokay Geckos in Appendix II, WWF issued a statement from Christiaan van der Hoeven, Senior Advisor at WWF:

“It is estimated that more than one million geckos are traded annually. Though not yet classified as threatened, there is indication that trade for traditional medicine and the pet trade has led to population declines. With effective implementation of this newly adopted listing, tokay geckos will now benefit from increased monitoring and regulation of trade.”
