A 10-year international negotiation has agreed a mechanism to support countries to keep their forests standing. Globally, significant greenhouse gas emissions contributing to climate change are shown to come from forest damage or destruction. In June a UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) meeting finaliseddetails on a mechanism (known as REDD+) to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation. REDD+ will reward countries for keeping carbon stored in forests. The agreement includes rules for measuring and verifying forest carbon, and safeguards to protect biodiversity and the rights and knowledge of indigenous peoples and local communities. WWF now calls for guaranteed finance for REDD+, and that REDD+ be part of the Paris climate deal.
