Dubai, United Arab Emirates, August 2010: Emirates Wildlife Society - WWF (EWS-WWF) is inviting UAE residents to participate in its ‘Choose Wisely’ Sustainable Fish Dish Challenge. The nationwide recipe competition, open to amateurs cooks and professional chefs alike, hopes to raise awareness of the declining stocks of some varieties of fish in the UAE and to promote sustainable fisheries.

EWS-WWF launched the Choose Wisely campaign in April 2010 after studies showed that high demand in the UAE for seafood has resulted in a noticeable decline of 80 percent of popular fish varieties over the last three decades. The study showed 66 percent of the UAE population eats fish at least once a week and one of the most popular fish in the UAE; the hammour, is being overfished at seven times above sustainable levels, putting it at the top of the overfished list.

UAE residents are invited to log on to www.choosewisely.ae and submit recipes created using sustainable fish. Recipes will be posted online and rated by visitors, with the highest rated recipes being featured in a UAE sustainable fish dish cookbook.

The challenge is open until 15th October 2010. For more information and to see a complete list of sustainable fish, visit www.choosewisely.ae
