Advisory to APP/APRIL buyers & investors | WWF

Recommendations to pulp and paper buyers

WWF believes that all companies in the supply chain should be responsible for their business and use their power to drive deforestation and forest degradation. By choosing responsible paper products, companies can stimulate responsible forestry practices, support restoration and biodiversity conservation and improve livelihoods in Indonesia and elsewhere.
WWF recommends companies and consumers purchasing pulp and paper products follow the WWF Guide to Buying Paper. Key recommendations specifically related to SMG/APP and RGE/APRIL are to:
  • Avoid potentially illegal and other unacceptable sources which include companies that have been disassociated from FSC, such as SMG/APP and RGE/APRIL.

  • Reduce excessive paper consumption.

  • Use sustainable pulp and paper products that are made of recycled fibre or are FSC certified.

  • When such sustainable alternative products are not available, WWF recommends following the Global Forest Trade Network Guide to Legal and Responsible Sourcing, and engage alternative suppliers to take a time-bound stepwise approach to have their fibre sources:

Step 1:  Evaluated against basic legality and traceability.
Step 2: Third party verified to meet FSC Controlled Wood standard.
Step 3: Certified to meet the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Forest Management standard.
