Mission of the Department:
- To engage audiences across the globe to accelerate conservation impact and to build the WWF brand.
- To ensure a coherent ‘One Brand, One Voice’ by integrating and supporting the communications functions across the WWF Network of offices around the world, Practices and Country Offices.
- To facilitate and coordinate the development and alignment of the WWF network to a global brand and communications strategy.
- To provide a centre of excellence to the network and convene the communications community in terms of communications practice, coordination across Practices, techniques, platforms and digital media.
- To provide common technology platforms network-wide to enable communication with the audience.
- Ensure the success of WWF’s global conservation goals by communicating the organisation’s work, profile and values to the global media, in line with network protocols.
- Responsible for managing the media to maximise external opportunities, to ensure media coverage which raises the profile of WWF, its experts and messages.
- Collaborates with the Brand, Digital and the Internal Communications teams to maximise opportunities and align messaging.
- Works with the Head of Media Relations to maintain and improve WWF’s reputation among a diversified group of stakeholders via media.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide high level support, advice, and media intelligence to the Secretariat and WWF Network of offices around the world in relation to corporate and conservation issues and crises, leading on strategic communications, especially in relation to the media.
- Provide senior media relations advice and support to the Media Relations team to ensure the successful communication of the organisation’s work, its profile and values to the global media, in line with network protocols.
- Work closely with the Head of Media Relations, and deputise for the Head of Media Relations as a central point of contact as required.
- Work closely with internal stakeholders such as the key ‘Practice’ areas, key programme leads and relevant communication focal points to support the development of media strategies that reflect and respond to risk, incorporate digital and stakeholder communications, and work towards our objectives using news and thought leadership content.
- Actively participate as part of the core team in key global fora with Network colleagues (climate and biodiversity CoPs, etc) and on our main pillars of work (Living Planet Report, Earth Hour, World Economic Forum etc).
- Provide support and advice to the Network offices and the Practices to build capacity, manage risk, and ensure maximum message alignment in line with agreed communications priorities.
- Provide input into communications strategies and implement as required by the Head of Media Relations
- Monitor the international media agenda and provide advice as appropriate on media opportunities and emerging issues.
- University Degree in communications, media, journalism or related subject AND/OR significant senior relevant professional experience, preferably in PR or media relations.
Required skills and competencies
- Proven success record in public relations, media relations, stakeholder management or a related field, as well as good knowledge in social media and digital influence arenas.
- Experience of working in complex / international / highly matrixed operations.
- Articulate, creative, passionate, flexible and tenacious.
- Excellent written and spoken English – French, Spanish and/or other languages an advantage.
- Attention to detail, diplomacy and discretion.
- Ability to work as part of a team in a multicultural environment.
- Flexible and comfortable working in a changing environment.
- Prepared to undertake some international travel.
- Proficiency and curiosity in new technologies, formats and new trends in journalism and public relations.
- Global mind-set and love of meeting new people and working across countries and cultures
- Interest in conservation and environmental issues.

External – Journalists and other media professionals, business leaders, event organisers, high-profile personalities and thought leaders, other NGOs and stakeholders, freelance project staff, monitoring agencies
Internal – Head of Media Relations; Unit Heads of Marketing and Communications Division; Practice Communications Managers, Network Communications staff; Communications & Marketing staff; National Offices and Programme Offices.
